Right-Sized Growing

I love a greenhouse.  They look so charming, on the inside and the outside.  I have lots of pictures of beautiful greenhouses pinned on my Pinterest boards.  In my fantasy world, I would be able to grow luscious plants and fill a backyard greenhouse full.

Here’s the problem, I really don’t like gardening that much.

I love containing gardening. But the follow through required to fill a greenhouse is not my jam.

However, I recently learned about something called a Wardian Case.  These are small wood or glass boxes used as moveable greenhouses.  They were used in the past to transport live specimens, often on ships as they crossed the Atlantic.

Today however, they are used for decorative purposes.  You can use them to plant terrariums or to house potted plants.  This seemed like the perfect way for me to “lean in” to the greenhouse idea.  So, I began hunting for a Wardian case for myself.

Once I found what I wanted, I had to decide whether to create a terrarium or select the potted plant route.  Creating a whole terrarium from scratch was not quite in my wheelhouse either.

My new Wardian Case is now installed in our sunroom filled with potted plants.  It brings me joy each day.  As time goes on, maybe I’ll get excited about terrariums.  This could always be my reach goal.  And perhaps in some future version of myself will learn to love gardening so much that a real greenhouse becomes a possibility...but, I doubt it.  I’ll keep you posted!
